Now then, I’m Josh!
If my work has caught your eye, you might want to know a little more about the person behind it. Here’s a bit about me.
My Design Journey
Hi there! I’m Josh Conboy, a self-taught visual identity designer from Yorkshire in the UK.
I’ve always been an artistic person—I’ve loved drawing since I was a kid. But when it comes to graphic design specifically, that journey started at the age of 13. Back then, like most kids around that age, I wanted to be a YouTuber. I posted football freestyling videos—juggling a football (a soccer ball, if you’re American) while performing different tricks. I wanted my channel to look the part, so I designed myself a logo and a YouTube banner. That was my first time using any graphic design software. A few of my friends at the time also had YouTube channels, so I offered to design banners for them too. Before I knew it, graphic design became a real passion.
I studied art & design throughout school and college, while continuing to focus more specifically on graphic design in my own time. I spent countless hours designing, teaching myself new skills, and gravitating more toward logo design as time went on. Over the years, I built up a respectable portfolio, simply from working on personal passion projects. I knew I wanted to make a career out of it, but I also knew university wasn’t the route for me.
So, after finishing college at 18, I sent my portfolio to almost every design agency in my hometown. One of them got back to me, invited me for an interview, and ended up offering me a full-time job that same day. That’s where my graphic design career began.
Working in this job gave me hands-on experience across all kinds of projects—branding, web design, packaging, marketing materials, you name it. My software skills improved massively, but more importantly, I gained a real understanding of the industry. Even outside of work, I always found time for my own passion projects, especially designing logos and visual identities, which I enjoyed the most.
Then, after just over a year in the job, things took a turn. The company lost some major clients, and I was made redundant. At the time, it felt like a setback, but looking back, it was a blessing in disguise. I’d always toyed with the idea of starting my own business, and this was the push to finally go for it. I started posting social media content to showcase my design work, picked up my first client after a few months, and haven’t looked back since. Now, I get to do what I love every day, working with clients from all over the world.
Beyond the Work
Enough about design—there’s more to me than that. For starters, I love to travel and try to go abroad at least once a year. As a Brit, you can’t beat a beach holiday to somewhere with hot weather, although I do enjoy a city break too.
Football is also a huge part of my life, whether I’m playing it myself or watching a match. Since I was a kid, I’ve always supported my hometown team, Hull City, which has involved both ups and downs (probably more downs). I’ve also been following Formula 1 for a few years now, so I’ll watch that regularly too.
I’m a big foodie, with a soft spot for Mexican and Indian cuisine. If I’m eating out, I’ll never say no to a Nando’s either—that’s another one of my favourites. Other than that, I’m always up for a good movie or series—The Hobbit will always be my favourite (all three of them).
Another thing I couldn’t live without is music. My taste is pretty diverse, but rap/hip-hop and R&B are my go-to genres. Post Malone is my all-time favourite artist and probably always will be, but I also love Drake, J. Cole, Bryson Tiller, and The Kid Laroi.
